Why does my iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.0.1 (JB) reboot whenever I am using GPS?
I have discovered that my jailbroken iPhone 3GS running 4.0.1 is running into a problem whenever i use any GPS program (TOMTOM, Magellan, Navigon). The GPS program runs fine for about 3-4 minutes, and then the iPhone will automatically reboot… I am not sure how to fix it. I wanted to restore the iOS, but I dont know how to jailbreak it again since I am not sure how to restore with 4.0.1 and not 4.1……
I tried the Maps application, and it too crashed the iphone into a reboot after a couple of minutes.
I downloaded 4.0.1 from the website suggested, and tried a shift restore, but it seems when when it communicates with Apple.com, it does not let me install/restore to 4.0.1.
Right then, few options available to you here……
1) The versions of tomtom etc, are they legit versions? i.e. downloaded from the App store and paid for? Or are they versions downloaded from Installous and hacked? If they are hacked you may have downloaded dodgy ipa files. You can uninstall them and try again, or you can try plotting a route on the native Maps application and see if the GPS usage within that app causes the same error? At least that way you can determine if its the GPS fix thats causing the reboot or if its the application itself.
2) you can download the 4.0.1 firmware, 4.1 hasnt been jailbroken yet. go to www.felixbruns.de – from the drop down list select your phone make, and firmware 4.0.1 and download the IPSW file, When thats done you can go to iTunes, hold SHIFT and click restore and then double click the firmware file on your machine and it will load that version onto your iPhone. It shouldnt pull up any errors as you are installing the same version and not rolling back the firmware.
3) If you choose to follow option 2 and restore to 4.0.1 then once its done you can open Safari, go to www.jailbreakme.com and jailbreak the handset via an untethered jailbreak. it does claim that jailbreakme.com supports jailbreaks on firmware up to 4.1 on the 3GS but im not sure so try it at your own risk. That will jailbreak the handset for you again, and you can start again.
4) before you do any jailbreak or restore make you sure transfer purchases across to iTunes so you can quickly reinstall tom tom without needed to download it again.
Also its worth noting that if the applications were installed via installous, then to do it again you will need to patch your iPhones installation file via Cydia before the hacked ipa’s will run
